Very timely post Jim. Scorching water pots is one of the most common newbie mistakes made in winter camping. I know, I used to teach winter survival to college ROTC cadets. Every year people would scorch pots and also burn their Mickey Mouse GI winter boots by the fire, DESPITE my repeated warnings.

Seems experience is a hard teacher.
