Greetings,

My son and I are heading to the superior Hiking Trail on July 14th through the 18th. We are both newbie hikers having done a couple of overnighters in State Parks. This will be our first multi night trip. The plan is to start at the trailhead in Two Harbors and see how far north we can travel and come out the morning or afternoon of the 4th day.

How many miles can we reasonably expect to travel? Does anyone have any suggestions for a good drop off point for the vehicle. As I have not been on the trail before, I am seeking any advice on the difficulty of the trail on this first leg, suggestions for campsites, etc.

I will be up in Duluth for a soccer tournament next weekend and will be stopping at the SHTA office for maps.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

When I hiked the trail I found 10 miles per day to be a very easy pace and got me to a campsite easily by mid afternoon. Your choices are somewhat determined by water sources and campsites. You are supposed to camp at the designated campsites, so frequently it will be either 10 miles or another 5+ miles to the next site. Nice trail and well marked for beginners.

The Superior Hiking trail guide book has info on which parking lots you can leave a car in overnight. I have always used the state parks as drop off/pick up sites. They will tell you which lot to in the park to use when you check in. Be aware that there is road construction on 35 in Duluth and traffic may be slower than usual.

Thanks for the replies. This is all good information to know. I plan on picking up the guide this coming weekend, and will be firming up the trip over the next month.

You might also try contacting the SHTA office and talking to the girls there. 218-834-2700
