NW Wyoming is getting hit by several late season storms. 14" of snow was recorded on South Pass (Wind Rivers) Sunday. Streams are at flood stage. Another strong storm is predicted Tue-Thurs with another foot of snow above 8,000 feet possible. Green River Lakes Road (Wind Rivers) is closed. This also affects Yellowstone and the Tetons. If going out, be prepared for wintery conditions. And definitly check the weather reports before going.

frown Don't say that. Maybe not the year for the Winds in late July?

Is this the west side of the range (which has been below normal) catching up with the east side? It looks as though the upper Green River Basin is now up to normal. It does appear that the east side also got more, though. Please keep us posted, w_d! After 50 years away from the state I've long since lost contact with anyone in Wyoming, and the Snotel data is both lower altitude and rather sketchy.

I'm glad I'm not going until August! My timeline is flexible so I could even wait until mid-August, although I'd rather not.

Another hazard of these many late-season snowstorms, at least here in the Northwest--the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center (which normally closes for the season April 1) has issued extreme avalanche warnings above 7,000 feet (that's mostly on the volcanoes) for last weekend and at least this week. There are many layers of unconsolidated snow just dying to slide. This link shows an awesome avalanche on North Sister in the central Oregon Cascades a week ago.

Some day, summer will come--maybe....

The snow and rain this weekend was east side weather- most snow in the southeast. The next storm will hit both sides, but there is still uncertainty regarding how much snow. Most predictions are 50% or less probablility. The flooding is all east side. August is a long ways off so I doubt you will notice, except likley mosquitoes will last longer (on the bright side - so will beautiful wildflowers). As for July, the Winds are very often snowy in early July. Last year had a nasty June with lots of snow and I started going out July 10th. Most high lakes were frozen. It was very soggy and trails very muddy - feet constantly wet. A few streams were impassible. Anything above 10,000 feet was basically winter.

I want to stay where it is green and has trees, but, in the Sierra that = bugs. Thank you for the info Nancy. I have vacation approved for July 30-August 8.

Your time frame should be OK, but I would expect that mosquitoes not have totally gone yet. I am afraid, this year, both the Sierra and Rockies will have a longer than normal mosquito season. We are all doomed to deal with the pesky critters this year! Peak mosquitoes last year were the last two weeks in July. By second week in August you would have a better probablility at avoiding mosquitoes. Hey- but first week in August is a lot better than second week in July. Just be sure you have some DEET. I have never had much trouble when walking (betweem me moving and the wind). Bigger pain is at camp so I usually get up at dawn so I can have a peaceful breakfast. Once the sun hits, the bugs really get thick.

Not many bugs out yet, it's been too cool. I had a couple at home over the weekend was all.

This last weekend put 6 inches of snow on the Mirror Lake Highway in the Uintas. Probably the same storm.
