It's also a good idea to have a couple days' "fudge" in the hiking schedule in case of unplanned layovers due to weather. I well remember a trip in the Wind Rivers in which, if my dog hadn't gotten sick, I'd have been stuck in a big snowstorm at 11.000 feet. If not needed, those contingency days can be spent in layovers or in extra exploration at the end of the trip.
