All good advice here. It would help to know where your ranch is. If it's in California, for example, what you heard was a black bear, and all advice here is sound.

If you were in Wyoming or Montana, it might have been a Grizzly...and that's a whole different animal.

Either way, weapons are a really bad idea. And bear spray in a teepee or tent is a recipe for disaster!
