Didn't know you were a pilot. One of my favorite things to do is cruise at about 1000ft agl and sight see using the sectional charts. If the compass will hold still, its actually useful, and you can do the whole trip using it and the attituded indicator.
IFR, although safer, is so mechanical.
Nav while hiking is so much different because of the pace and lack of visual cues.
