I have an old (30 years) REI down jacket that I bought on sale then. Its 550 down and has a hood. Its very warm and is still my standard winter parka unless I expect real cold, its a bit thicker than a TNF Nuptse. It cost $60 then and has given me 30 years of service, BUT I always had the correct shell to pull on over it in case of precipitation. You do not need a $500 coat to be warm, they're just nice. You also do not need a $500 shell, especially if its below freezing. Try a wool sweater under that cheap down jacket and you'll be toast warm.
