You know, I know I made it sound like water availibility was the critical thing. It's not. It's that you will drink less than you need, not realize it, and get dehydrated. I still do that myself - I just got back from a mostly-alpine outing. I drank seven liters in 2 days of hiking, and I'm still playing catch up.

The tendency is to keep hiking and paying attention to other things, like the animals and scenery, and not drink enough. You won't feel thirsty before you're dehydrated. So keep sipping and don't underestimate.
