When I started out I bought a Coleman Inyo II it weighs 4lbs. Still have that tent it is bomb proof. It was $100 when I bought it and I used that tent for 4-5 years steadily and then moved to a lighter tent (and more $$). Go to backpacking websites and read the reviews, they tell the good the bad and the ugly. And there is a massive amount of experience and knowledge here. Then google shop what you've found to find a good price. I use the heck out of expensive sites for the gear reviews and then if I find a better price I buy it where I found the better price.
