5.11 just came out with a Summer weight fabric that should provide easier wear for hiking, though I have'nt tried them.

Another option would be to take a favorite pair of shorts into to a tailor with the bottoms/legs of a pair of pants that maybe had the seat or belt loops damaged and have them sewn on with a zipper.
