Thanx Charles. This is a neat addition.

For my speedometer, I have a “Planet Bike Protegé 8.0 Bike Computer”. It has been working great for 2.5 years on my Bacchetta giro 26. I replaced the battery at the 2 year mark because the display was getting a little dim. This past winter, it has stopped working when temperature is <60F. The battery is still good. I have cleaned all contacts. I have the magnet as close as possible to the sensor (0.5mm, wow!). But alas, the computer gets no signal until the temperature rises.

I’m just wondering if I need a stronger magnet? Any ideas why it doesn’t work all the time?

Barry, I suspect it is the battery. It probably is losing voltage in the cold weather-the same way that camera batteries quit working.

If you take out the battery and test it in cold weather, I think you will see a voltage drop. I can't think of anything else it could be.

I had bad luck with a Planet Bike computer. It suddenly died on me after a few months. I didn't look into replacing it because I went wireless.

Your problem does sound like a battery issue. Is your battery lithium? They are not affected by cold as much as other chemistries.

I use a Cateye, but any problems I've had with mine have been fixed by a new battery, even though the old battery should still have been good. Try that first and you may be surprised.
