I recently discovered how much happier I am (and how much less fatigued and hungry I am) when I BP with very little weight. Now Im kinda obsessed...
Anyways, I am wondering about the specifics on how to make the ray-way gravity water filter. I use the heavy Katadyn Combi (best tasting water in the world!), but would love to try something new. Can anyone send me in the right direction? If i understand it correctly, you can hike as it filters...?
PS Please no more discussion about "filter vs. chem," "Why even filter at all," "is that a filter in yer pocket, or are U just glad to see me?" etc.

Oh, and you could go to Ray Jardine's website, unless he has banned you for some reason, and ask him directly. Wow! Now there's a revelation

Hi, I agree that a gravity water filter that is light enough is a good way to go.
Sometime back in the summer of 2005 I bought a ULA H20 Amigo and tried that. It worked well but I did not like the filter that came with it. I also thought I could make one lighter.
This link will take you to my MYOG Gravity Filter thread at backpackinglight.com. MYOG - Gravity Water Filter
ULA picked up my filter idea and they now come with the filter I used on my Gravity Water Filter.
This is sort of easy as a "Do it yourself project - MYOG"
I think I was just being too familiar. Really, I just didn't want to rehash stuff thats been talked about already. I have learned a ton from y'all at this site, and I wasn't trying to be a jerk. The "is that a filter in yer pocket" line was really just a joke. I respect the forum, and maybe just got a little too personal too soon.
Thanks for the link, Garden. This is helping to clear things up a bit. I was sort of thinking about a system that you set up in your pack as you hike, but maybe that is totally unneccessary. I suppose I could stand by a nice little stream for a few minutes while gravity does its work... As I mentioned, I really love the taste of my Combi filter, do you think a carbon prefilter could be added to this model?

Just trying to keep the Forum in line without the chaos I see every Spring here where folks expect 'instant' answers even though they don't bother to introduce themselves or participate. It's the, "sorry to eat and run generation'; guess I was raised differently.

Yeah, I can definitely see your point. Your strong reaction just shows that you are a considerate person, and that you take your pasttime seriously. Thats a good thing.
I posted a "Getting to know me" thread on Lite Gear Talk that hopefully will give you a little better idea about who I am. I haven't seen any of those types of threads anywhere in this forum, but I figured I had some backpaddling to do if I wanted to be in the gang, so what the heck!
I really like all of the little tricks and secrets you learn as a backpacker, and its not cool to feel like you're being pickpocketed by some fly-by-night.
Enuf said.
Props 2 U, Earthling.

I'm cool with that W2FR, it only makes sense if you're here for the long run so that folks can give more precise anwsers to your questions, Thanks for understanding the seriousness of going into the wilderness prepared

Yes, Salish, I rarely see you in the fracas anymore. Seems I have to stir the pot a bit to get some folks to resurface I'm still learnin' me'self no expert here
ULA's Amigo filter is similiar I think to what W2R is asking about though

Wow, massive brain-drain on my part; I meant to say welcome to "weight2funratio". But thanks to you too, Earthling. What can I say - it's late in the day....
