I came across this one looking for places to backpack in Iowa. Since I'm from the eastern edge of Iowa, Wisconsin is close to home. I'm planning on hiking it in sections, particularly since it appears that some sections prohibit dogs so I'll have to do those without Tussah.

I'm going to order the trail guide from iceagetrail.org, and of course a quick google search brings up some resources. But I thought I'd see if anyone on here knew of any resources (books or online) that were particularly helpful, or had any advice for this trail.

I'm 28 and have done a lot of day hikes over all kinds of terrain, and winter backpacking trips up to a week long in the Boundary Waters (on skis, snowshoes, and boots, depending on conditions). Wisconsin is familiar territory for me for hiking and camping (and rock climbing), as well.

So I'm not a complete beginner but not super experienced, and this will be my first time planning and executing a solo trip(s).

I've never backpacked the Ice Age trail so I can't give you much advice. I've crossed it a few times while going mountain biking in Kettle Moraine SP (15 or so years ago). It looked like a very well marked trail. I believe sections of it are even paved. I think the hardest part of backpacking that trail is making sure you end up in an area you can set up a tent each night. The Kettles are hilly but the geography of southern Wisconsin isn't that much different from Iowa. I can't really say much beyond that.

Thanks!

I've been hiking at Kettle Morraine and Devil's Lake, specifically, and I'm sure there's a lot of the rest of the trail that I've seen or hiked or biked over the years. My family gets up to Wisconsin a lot.

I'm glad the trail is generally well-marked. I'm capable of following less obvious trails, but flag-tape marked trails make me nervous.
