I live in Sisters Oregon in the shadow of the Three Sisiters range and just east of the wilderness area named for the range, and at an altitude of 3200 feet above sea level. I live in weather on a day to day basis that many would consider winter camping. Around here people wear blue jeans and cotton hoodies when its above 20 degrees. Every body wears either Sorels or tennis shoes all winter long and the down jackets are $80 affairs not marmot. Anyway we do stay pretty warm even though this gear isn't expedition grade, or is rarely breathable, BUT for the most part it is dependable and rugged enough to stand constant use for months on end. I wear cotton wool blend long underwear from the Bi-mart that can be worn four days in a row without becoming too smelly. Anyway I noticed in the Cabellas catalog that they have down long underwear for $60 per piece. Most people have expensive coats and neglect their legs, for $60 you can have down pants. Also LLbean and other companies provide serviceable clothes to this market. Jim

Cool find! Too bad Cabela's doesn't list weights on their clothing. I wonder how this compares for warmth to the US military BDU liners that have been mentioned before?

Cook it makes absolutely no difference what they weigh. Lets say they weigh a pound - so what? Compared to any equal amount of anything else as far as warmth, they weigh less. My goretex down full zip bibs weigh 32 ounces and cost a lot of money, these are cheap - buy two. Jim

Their Merino Wool Long Johns are as cheap as I have seen - anywhere. Plus there is a $20 gift certificate for purchases over $100 that is good until Jan 11.
"Cheap" can mean inexpensive to purchase, or, like my Cabela's Thermastat polyester mid weight long johns, cheap B/C I've had 'em over 10 years and they are still almost like new despite consant winter use. (At least 35 days a winter)
So cheap to me is good quality but long lasting. Cheap therefore is $$/year of use.

The wieght complaint was not specifically in regards to the use of the use of Cabela's down underwear for winter use but a general complaint. How can I compare the down underwear to, for instance, the Montbell UL down inner pants, without a weight? For the record, I wouldn't think of using the UL down inner pants as winter clothing where I live without additional leg insulation.

cook I suppose you could call them... but I'll bet there is a huge difference in price between the Montbell (really good stuff) and the cabelas. You said the Montbell are too light for winter camping, so maybe for $50 you put cabelas over them and then xlarge rain pants? Jim
