Ok, let me confess up front, I haven't read all the posts yet. I have read several.
Here's my need/question. I'm starting to prepare our Boy Scout troop for thinking light and cooking light. We'll be taking a day hike in a couple of weeks and I'm looking for meal ideas for a midday meal. We'll have a few stoves available. I hope to not "cook meals" but only heat water. I've got guys from 11 to 16 going, so many different attitudes about hiking/food/outdoors. I'd also like for them to not make "jelly samiches" and haul them for lunch. The plan is to leave "car camp", hike all morning, prepare lunch and eat, hike all afternoon, return to "car camp". Kind of an intro day. I'm trying to keep them light so they'll enjoy the hike.
Keep it cheap and light, ramen, repackage in ziplock and throw away the msg packet, with foil pack tuna or chicken. Pour water into ziplock with ramen wait 10 min, add tuna/ckicken or other, Maybe bring some extra spices, there light and inexpensive you can ziploc them as well or get small reusable containers.
This is basic but maybe a good intro.

A great way to get the guys involved is to have one of the meetings before be all about food Is there a teen boy who doesn't love to eat? We have done presentations for Scouts and I always bring the dry items for a couple recipes, have the guys come up and help me, make a massive mess then they get to eat it all. No one is bored, no whining...rather they are excited. Heh!
Took a hike a few weeks back and did Sarbar's Pizza Ramen and Cheesy Bacon Mashers. My son loved the ramen, I thought there were alright. I loved the CBM but my son didn't care for them. Both are real cheap, compared to pre-packaged meals...
What you might do is have the boys bring a variety and then pass them around. But I vote for the CBMs...

Well here's the report. The outing was a success. We managed a nice hike with a lunch stop in the middle. A couple of boys and myself had the Pizza in a Pot. That was a winner. Another boy did Ramen and chicken and my son did Cheesy Bacon Mashers. We'll definitely be using more of those Sarbar FBC recipes! Thanks so much!
Oh and a Shout for whitebox stoves, Bill got me one in 3 days and thru in a new windscreen! That's twice I've been impressed with his service now!
