I need a coat for this Winter. Temperatures will most likely not get below 0 during the day where I'm at. I would like something that is Gore-tex. Anyone know of a good brand that doesn't carry a price tag because of its name?
During the off season, I would buy brand name, used, from eBay, or check at thrift stores in cities that have no appreciation of winter gear. Fleece or down jackets are really cheap in thrift stores in Phoenix in June.
Today, I would look at Cabelas, Campmor, Sierra Trading Post (aka STP on this board), and other discounters for close-outs on last year's colors.
I have a 4oz nylon wind jacket for my 'Winter Coat'. I wear it or carry it every day. I got a Large for $20, and an XXL for $12 which is the one I use in winter. It's the extra room for the thicker layers underneath that makes it 'winter'.
Mostly 0 Degrees F. I would like gore-tex because in the Mountains of WV it gets cold but often it's only cold enough to create snow that's going to melt as soon as it hits anything other than air. I'm also looking for a coat with a removable liner so I can still use the gore-tex during the rainy parts of early Spring.

I find it's best to mix and match. Fleece of various weights plus an UNinsulated goretex shell. I got a marmot precip for $50 in the off season. I can wear it year round as a rain jacket and add as many layers as I want underneath for warmth. Just be sure to use REAL fleece and not cotton. Of couse you can always use down or another lofting product, but this is expensive, usually. REI has a primaloft jacket with zipoff sleeves, or you can use a montbell themawrap or something if you have a little extra money. If you really want to splurge, get an eVent shell to wear over your fleece or whatever.
A true winter shell might have better air sealing, such as a snow skirt. if you need this, be sure you get it. My precip for example is extremely drafty if I try to use the pockets since they are mesh inside.
Personally, I don't wear much down, since I sweat a lot.
Own it, love it, got it cheap at Campmor in the off season. While not Goretex, I've worn it for brief periods in an all-out downpour with no problems. It's not the lightest thing out there, but it's my non-backpacking everyday winter jacket here in NE Wisconsin.
