Hi all,
Made a 5 day visit to the Pecos Wilderness in New Mexico, May 10 - 15. We went in at the Jack's Creek trailhead, headed for Pecos Baldy Lake. Our intent had been to spend 5 days going past the lake and across Trailriders Wall to Truchas Lake, do a bit of summit bagging, then out via a different trail system (undecided). We found a lot of snow above 10,500', which made for slow progress anytime except mornings, when the snow was frozen. Lot of blowdowns on trails as well. We ended up camping a couple nights in meadows near Pecos Baldy Lake (still frozen BTW), then circling down to a camp just above the closure area around Beattys Cabin, then back out.
Weather was good - clear nights (cold!), windy days, but no precip. Pecos Baldy lake was still frozen when we visited, but the margins were melting out. Lot of downed trees across trails make for interesting route finding. The next few weeks should be the GOOD zone for trips to the Pecos. The snow is melting day by day, water in the streams remains at good flow - interesting stream crossings, but no lack of water either.
