The Katadyn Hiker Pro filter has carbon granules in the center tube area of the filter to help improve the taste of your water.

I carry a small cup to ladle water from wherever I am trying to get my water to the bag.

The filter works quick enough that I am not sure trying to filter while you are hiking would be that necessary.

That is unless someone was after you.
