No matter what I do, I keep coming back to Oats as a major part of my back country diet. I've recently been looking at trail mix and see a need to add cereals to reduce the fats while maintaining the protein. Nuts are high in protein and fats while fruit is pure carbohydrate. Grains have carbohydrates and some protein. I can get a reasonable balance between Fats, Carbohydrates and Protein by adding some Cheerios. The problem is that cereals are bulky. On a weight basis, the mix looks good, but the cereals add a lot of volume. Grape Nuts are dense, but are too fine for trail mix. Oat and Honey Granola looks like a relatively dense cereal and should work OK. I'm also looking at roasted Edamame and Chickpeas to balance the nuts.
