As with so much received wisdom about bears, this one goes directly against what experts say you should do in a grizzly attack (although this strategy is what's recommended in a black bear attack). Which is only to say that bears are very smart and very individualistic and don't always fit neatly into the 'common bear behavior profile'. Sometimes being lucky is better than being skilled.
