Poles that stay locked and can briefly support your body weight. The rest is all preference. If you want to use them for a shelter support an adjustable pole is preferable.

I would use what you have until they bend/break, and start reading threads about trekking poles again. Lots of folks start with the WalMart poles. They're just heavier than a lot of other options.

I started with Komperdell - they lasted about a year. I still have one of them but the other fails to lock.
