My wife and I were out snowshoeing today and we ran into a few cross country skiers. It looked like a lot of fun and we really want to get into it.

We want to get some cheap (i mean CHEAP), used skiis from somewhere like a garage sale, Goodwill, Craig's List or the like but I confess, I know literally nothing about skiing gear.

Is there anything in particular I should pay attention to when checking out used skis? Any deal breakers in the bindings, the edge, the scales on the bottom? Any advice would be much appreciated.
