Hi there. I've been eyeing the new MSR Hyperflow. Do you guys know if it is still made in the USA or has MSR gone over to China as well?

I also hear that the filter needs to be backflushed every 8L. Is that true? I find that a bit excessive.

My son ordered the hyperflow for our recent trip and at the last minute found it was on backorder. Since it didn't arrive in time for the trip. We went to a local outfitter and purchased a MSR miniworks for the trip. We pumped our asses off. When the hyperdrip arrives, I will own a pumper, but what I really want is the Platy clean stream. I may convert the filter from the hyper to a gravity style filter. I think gear stores should let you know when you order something if it ain't gonna arrive in time.
So to answer your question No, I have no experience with that unit. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

I handled one in the store the other day, and didn't notice country of origin. It's nicely made, and the MEC site says it's made in the States.

Backflow frequency will largely depend on source water quality, so I wouldn't fret over that stat. It *is* a small filter, so there's less filter media than a lot of other models.

The filter and the element are made in the good ol' USA (actually 90% of all Cascade Design's products are made here). Cascade Designs has made a few sacrifices in keeping most of their manufacturing in the USA, but those sacrifices have paid off in the long run.

You are right in that the instructions state that in order to get the optimum life from the HyperFlow the user should backflush every 8L. It is a fairly simple process and should only take a few minutes. If this is excessive (and dependent on water quality), I would at least backflush after every trip using a chlorine solution. The more you backflush, the greater the life of the filter element.

Because these are suggestions not requirements, many won't heed them. I would dare say that most people who own filters do little if any maintenance in the field or when they return home. The one thing to keep in mind is that it is an OPTION that the HyperFlow offers that very few filters do. The fact that you can backflush and get a significant performance advantage afterwords is one if it's major benefits.

Thanks for your response Jasonlivy. I was hoping you would come forward and answer. I'm glad to see MSR is still around the good ol' US of A. I have already placed my order for the Hyperflow and can't wait for it. I found it a bit pricey but for an american made product I'm willing to pay more. Actually I have used REI's 20% off coupon and that helped a lot. Kudos to MSR!
