My fiancee likes to go hiking with me, but there's one thing that makes hiking easier for the fellows and not the ladies: the ability to pee standing up. I'm sure most of you ladies know about the various products on the market that help you accomplish this normally boys-only action, but have you been too nervous to try it in the field, and nowhere safe to practice at home? If so, this is for you: http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/superpiipii.html

There's also a few guys at my work who could benefit from some practice, too.

Now if only they figured out how to make a Wii game to practice doing a number 2 with showshoes on I'd be all set for virtual potty training for the backcountry

I personally do not find squatting any problem at all. As for privacy, well, if anyone wants to look, so what. And the night excursions are good excuses to look at the stars! The only time I have seen that you guys have an advantage is when I have to be in a climbing harness all day on a vertical wall. All those gagets are primarily for pretty specific situations - such as being at 20,000 feet on Mt. Everest in a storm when everyone has to pee into a bottle. Methinks, you think our "burden" is really more than it really is.

I use one of these Freshette --similar concept--and I really do like it. I can insert it through my zip-off pants opening or under my shorts and never have to expose myself at all. I can use it in my tent at night with the bag attachment and empty it in the morning.

I tried one of those Freshette things a couple of years ago. I discovered that I had to pull my slacks and underpants down anyway (evidently this gizmo requires a fly front and either those awful bikini-style panties or fly-front men's briefs. Then I ended up with pee all down my legs and pants anyway. Forget it; I'd far rather have a few mosquito bites on my bottom.

Since I only wear zip-off pants when hiking, I find I only need to unzip a portion of one leg to maneuver the device into place. Positioning does take a bit of practice.

I'm with you, WD. I learned really quickly how to squat without wetting everything on me. And most folks don't want to watch me go in the woods. At least not the friends that I hike with.

I did have a deer watch me go, though. That was weird.

I sooo agree! I can pee nearly standing up anyways, without a device. Big deal!

Heck, I happen to like getting up middle of the night! I can stretch and get to take a look at the sky while I walk 10 feet or so from my tent. It isn't difficult nor hard to go pee being a woman.

Why does standing while peeing make hiking easier? It has NOTHING to do with hiking!

Hiking is unisex. Being able to pee standing up only makes it easy to pee standing up. Which if you go to any public restroom, you do that anyway - hovering over pee covered toilet seats builds up those thigh muscles!

Hovering over the seat is what makes them pee-covered!

I agree. My butt rarely touches public bathrooms. No thanks. Not to be toooo TMI, but if you do Kegels like crazy it, er, helps with that issue - for both men and women It strengthens the ability to be able to stop while peeing.

In my case it was a marmot. Then he came over and started licking the sand where it'd soaked in - must've been after the salt, but we thought he was pretty kinky...

I agree it's easier just to squat or semi-squat rather than using a device that needs to be cleaned off and leaves me needing to be cleaned off just as much or more as if I had not been using it. In really cold weather or bad mosquito areas I envy the guys, but mostly it's fine.

Dunno about that. There is one area of exposed skin on my body I can't put 100% deet on. it's painful, and trust me it's really really unpleasant to have mosquito or blackfly bites on it, and yes, they swarm that bad.. so it's not always a help in *really* bad bugs..

Marmots do not care if the pee is "male" or "female"! Last year my S.O. had a marmot licking the pee before he was finished! They go after the salt - will chew up your trekking pole handles, pack straps - anything with sweat. We always have to hang these items above their reach.

Restrooms can be few and far between in some of the long, long ultramarathons I do. Many people of both sexes will answer the call of nature not very far off the trail. When you're 12 hours into a race in the middle of nowhere, tired, sore and often nauseated, and you have 25 miles to go, modesty goes out the window.

And I'll tell you, I've seen some women whose "pit stops" are almost as quick as the guys!!!! Maybe it's a matter of practice. I even saw one gal pee standing up (yes I'm sure she was a lady) but don't ask me how.

Ouch. I see what you're saying. Of course with tricky maneuvering I imagine you could get away with only exposing about 1 square inch of skin (not casting size aspersions upon the remainder of square inches left inside your clothing, you understand ), whereas I pretty much have to bare waist down to thighs, front and back, to pee if I choose not to use a funnel - but not all those square inches of my hiney would be quite as painful from bites as what you're referring to.

Thank goodness the mosquitoes down in the SIerra are not as bad as you've got 'em up there, and I'm happy to say I've never had the pleasure of blackflies!

My girls won't go hiking with me but I bet they would play wii. If there were a hiking game they would play it for hours. Maybe if they could decorate the tent with fu fu then they would have a reason to virtual camp.

Oh, I still have to get just as much exposed for a number 2 - and trust me, in this case I put
the 100% DEET on pretty much all that stuff inside a bugnet before going out to expose
myself to do that. It's just that mr happy is really unhappy with those kinds of burning toxic chemicals on him.

Maybe you could try something like BiteBlocker for Mr. Happy, which doesn't have toxic chemicals (and I don't recall it feeling irritating at all) but has pretty good repellence for mosquitoes and is supposed to also protect against black flies, though I have no experience with them. I use BiteBlocker instead of DEET to good effect in the Sierra, even during relatively heavy (for there) mosquito periods. I think it's made in Canada.

There's also oil of lemon eucalyptus, which rated even higher than BiteBlocker on a study of non-DEET repellents, but something about the "lemon" in the name makes it sound like it might sting sensitive areas. I don't think BiteBlocker would.

Maybe just try it at home first to see if it bothers Mr. H.

Lemon Eucalyptus is not citrus derived at all... it is just a variety of eucalyptus. It might have a cooling effect like many eucalyptus products do...

OK...Here's how and here's graphic video evidence (PG rating?) that this is possible. If this one isn't proof enough, try a youtube search for "shenis".

Now we all can say we've seen a gal pee standing up.
