So, I was working on a new quilt and I found it to be much more tedious than originally expected. This was frustrating me to no end, as I couldn't figure out a way to keep the insulation flat. It just kept getting all messed up and clumpy.
I didn't know they came in the same color! That's too bad... Mine were sold as-is and are non-refundable.
Looks like they made their own quilt! Or maybe you could make them part of the quilt. Little pockets for em. Do you take them with you in the back country?
It's just el-cheapo Walmart batting. They carry a couple brands, but I opted for the cheapest which was the Morning Glory brand (High Loft). In all, it's 100% polyester and weighs about 2.7oz a square yard for every 1/2" of thickness. You purchase the rolls of insulation by bed size, so a king size roll ($10.97) measures about 110"x110" and weighs in at 25.4oz. It's not the lightest, but it does work .
http://www.warmcompany.com/ I love this companies products (more for quilting than say outdoors). All made in the US as well

Eric- Is this quilt for backpacking or home use? Have you used the batting before for outdoor projects?
I bought some 1" loft stuff (~6 oz/yd2) and was going to use it for practice before buying some Climashield or some other insulation. I've got my pieces cut and ready to sew, but I'm curious how usable this practice piece will be. Any idea on temperature range?
Heh I think that's the El-cheapo crap I got at wal mart for my deconstructed hammock underquilt - I just hacked it into a phat-butt hammock shape, stuff it in a compression sack, and stick it between my silponcho and my hammock bottom. eventually I might aquire some more high tech insulation to do it with , but this works.
Phat- Original use of the poncho to make it multi-use...nice.
How has the insulation held up to the packing/unpacking process? Any tears or significant loss of loft? Again, expectations are low, but just trying to get an idea of how well it will hold up.
It munges around a bit, and a halfarsed fluff it out with my hands every time I unstuff it. After 3-4 trips using it like this in the cool, it's not pretty like "sit it under Eric's dogs for a picture that says AWWWW " It now looks more like a ratty piece of teddy bear innards.. - however it is still functionally fine. and keeps my bum warm
Sounds like you use your silponcho and the el-cheapo batting in a way like the "Garlington Insulator"? I have rigged up my poncho in this fashion too, I haven't added any additional insulation yet. (Still haven't taken out the pad from inside the hammock to test it out yet).
