I'm looking into getting a mug to make tea over my whisperlite international. Can I heat water in a Ti mug over my stove?
Also, is a double wall mug worth the extra weight vs. a single wall mug?

I own an Evernew Ti mug that is a single wall. I have a lid for it and use it to boil water and have had no problems. I usually let it cool before putting the lid on. In my expierience, they cool quicker than double walls, but not so much so with a lid.

Single wall - it's lighter and heats better.

Then go find some reflectix at home despot, or an old closed cell pad, get our your duct tape and shop knife, and make a cozy for it - just a fitted jacket of insulation - it will stay
hot better than the double wall, and will be lighter.

Many of us carry just a single small pot, with a cozy made for it like this.

Hey Blacklite,
Keep in mind that you can't put a double wall mug on a stove. The suggestion above about making a Reflectix cozy is a good one.

Thanks guys, I thought the double wall might be a bad idea on the stove but wasn't sure.
I'll try a few different cozy ideas and see what I like. Thanks again.

Ok Jason, I'll ask. Why CAN'T you put a double wall ti mug on a stove?
Does it cause the two to separate?

Not likely to explode, unless you could put a little water in the gap. Even if you put it on the stove with no water in it, I doubt you'd be able to get more than an atmosphere or two (15-30 PSI) in it. That would probably be enough to bulge the bottom, but not enough to burst it.

If it's a vacuum, you can heat it all day and nothing would happen. But it would be more costly to manufacture, so it's probably air.

It also won't heat very well. The same quality that insulates to keep hot things from cooling off very fast even when it's cold will also keep the inside from heating up very fast -- even when it's on a burner.

Additionally, the temperature differential between inside and outside can contribute to the warping that others have mentioned.

Ti mugs??? Why, for Heaven's sake? To cook in? That's the only reason I can see.
Metal can get very HOT. Yeah, that's why the extra weight of double walled Ti mugs. Oldtimers like me remember lip-burning stainless steel "Sierra" cups. Yech!

I drink from a common, graduation marked, plastic "camp cup. I use it for measurement as well.

In winter I use double walled, (foam between the walls) large mug with a rotating lid top. Keeps hot liquids hot.

Seriously, I know ULers want a mug/pot combo. Well, fine, if that's a way to shave ounces.. But a tall narrow "pot/mug" is not as fuel efficient as a lower, wide pot. This has been well studied. So my aluminum 1 L. pot (or 1.5 L. pot W/ the Flux Ring bottom) are very eficient and my little plastic cup VERY light. Best of both worlds for a few ounces more and less hassle when cooking. The same boiled water for tea bag coffee is used to make instant oatmeal. No lighting the stove twice.

As has been noted, don't put a double-wall mug on a flame. From the REI listing of a Snowpeak mug:

"Double-wall construction is not suitable for cooking; do not place on an open flame or hot burner."

They're great for holding the heat, but a cozy can approximate that benefit.

I also like plastic camp cups. They’re lighter than titanium and insulate OK.

I prefer a single wall metal (ti or alum. or SS or even tin) cup to a plastic cup. Say something happens to your normal pot that you boil water in while out in the wilderness (maybe you lose it or it gets crushed beyond repair in the field, etc.). That plastic cup is pretty much worthless now over a campfire/stove/whatever, right? I always like to have a "back-up" when I'm far from home...especially when it weighs so little.
But then again, YMMV.

I have always liked the double walled ti cup better than my single walled cup. I always burn my lips with the single walled cup but that does not happen with the double walled cup. I have been thinking about getting a single walled aluminum or SS cup. Maybe it does not have the tendency to burn the lips so much. I have used the plastic cups and have nothing against them except I have not been able to find one where the handle folds flat against the cup its self. Interesting topic to be sure.

I'd like to see a poll on how many backpackers have ever lost their cooking pot in the backcountry and wished they had a spare....

Working with Boy Scouts...well you wouldn't believe the stuff they lose I have also seen adults crush their pots accidentally several times (Think Heiney can).
