I went to Walmart for their $1 yrd sale and picked up some 4 oz ripstop (I weighed it). I wanted it to do test runs on a backpack, tarp, hammock, and whatever else I can think of. For the backpack, what kind of padding is normally used in the shoulder straps, hip belt, and backpanel, and where can I get some? I was thinking a ccf pad, but am not sure. Thanks.

I have bought foam from this place http://www.foambymail.com/
They have great service. I use 3/4" polyethylene and 1/4" minicell in my pack. The 1/4 stays in the sleeve and the poly goes in before anything gets packed. Both are inside the pack. The poly comes out at camp and makes a great sit pad. I think the poly has lost its firmness and is need of replacement. I could continue to use it, but I have a huge sheet, so why not. It has about 400 trail miles. I tried using election sign material, but it weighed the same as the poly and had no multiuse that I could conceive, Plus the edge of it was sorta sharp and sorta rough no matter how I tried to cut it and I was afraid it would wear a hole in my pack.

That looks like a great source. What did you use in your shoulder straps?

Get a blue foam sleeping mat and cut it with an exacto knife.
I added these to my current pack and it feels really comfortable.
for 10 dollars you could get enough foam to make
back supports, strap stuffing, etc for 2 packs! Also completely waterproof!
Heres a link:

What did I use in the shoulder straps? Well at first I was going to use socks and stuffb but that sucked - so I ended up using 1/4" minicell. And in retrospect it would have been alot easier to have done that off the get go. Live and learn. I would love to get some of that stuff that Golite is using for their shoulder straps. It is very comfortable and looks like it would be easy to work with.

For shoulder straps and hipbelt padding, I've used the blue foam from REI. It seems like good quality (lots of closed cell foam will not recover well from dents, creases, etc.). It's available in 3/8" thick sleeping pads and 1/2" thick sit pads. I suspect that the yellow CCF that MEC sells is also good quality.

I use the blue foam sleeping pads. While I'm shure there are better materials around, the blue foam seems to do the job well and are very easy to aquire. While I traditionally use Walmart foam, I would not mind trying another material if is better.

Election sign not multiuse? Have you not been watching the tv coverage of the fraudulent election taking place my good man You could take it out of your pack and use it to hitchike with; knowing whoever picked you up is also a supporter
