So, what mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, inbred moron of a Trump appointee decided that September 15 (the due date for estimated tax payments) would be a good day to shut down the IRS electronic payment system for "planned maintenance"?

Yes, I know, payments aren't technically due until the 16th, since the 15th is a Sunday. That doesn't really make me feel any better - I'm leaving tomorrow morning for a 3-day business trip, and won't have internet access until Tuesday. Now I gotta dig out an envelope, write a check, and drive to the post office.

One more reason to vote Democrat (as if there weren't enough already.)

Thanks for letting me vent.(I'm really glad my accounting career didn't include tax preparation for the last 20 years.)

Make sure the PO will cancel the envelope with today's date! Otherwise the date will be tomorrow.

I will say nothing about procrastination because I do the same thing myself! Every year I tell myself that I won't wait until the last minute, and every year. . .

Oops, forgot that if the deadline is Sunday or holiday, it's postponed to the next business day. So if you got it into the PO Sunday, the Monday postmark is OK. As you know, but other readers may, like me, have forgotten.

Thanks to inflation and fixed income, I now no longer have to pay Federal tax. I still have to file for the state of Oregon. It's a lot cheaper than if I moved to WA and paid their sales tax, though.

Thanks, Mouse - I did realize that the Monday postmark was OK, but thought that was one of those arcane bits of knowledge only we accountants find useful. smile

I'm about 15 months from being where you are, with no federal tax liability (unless the Republicans decide the rich are being overtaxed, still, and that we old people aren't paying our fair share.) I've just got to shed my part-time job and eliminate the W-2, and then I'm free to do a lot more backpacking and pay a lot less tax.
