I went to see the Walk in the Woods movie Saturday night. It was entertaining and I enjoyed it but it was not much about actual backpacking. I am not a prude but the language was worse than I felt it had to be. I read some reviews after seeing the movie and the main consensus was that it moved way too slow. No action.

As a person who goes to a movie every couple of years and not having watched television in years I obviously am out of the loop. The previews before the movie show what I and the Walk in the Woods movie is missing. Movies need car crashes, beating up on people, sex and lots of guns. If the previews are any indication of American values we are in deep trouble.

I guess that I will take my backpack and crawl back into my cave in the woods.

I saw it Saturday night, too, and pretty much agree: a pretty good buddy movie (especially since the buddies are my contemporaries), but not really about backpacking or the AT. I liked the movie better than the book.

Did you notice their packs? They carried hiking poles lashed to their packs the entire time. If they had taken them off, they might not have fallen into the creek. Somewhere, when seeing all the other hikers in the movie using them, one would have thought that a light bulb would have gone off. Just saying...

I was also glad to see that the grizzly bear is making a comeback east of the Mississippi. Somehow, I missed that story on the news.

On the other hand, they got a couple of things right: the shelter scene looked about right (not sure, but was that shelter in the Grayson Highlands? It looked familiar.) And, who among us has not met Mary Ellen?

All in all, better than most movies which, as Gord said, are pretty much trash. Of course, there is a silver lining to the current state of the cinema: I don't get to eat nearly as much movie popcorn as I would like, since we only go to about 2 or 3 a year - I guess that counts as a health benefit?

Saw it last night. We laughed out loud. It's not the book, but had some good snippets from the book. The book isn't about backpacking or the AT, really. Sad they didn't have the part about Katz ditching all the food at the beginning. Mary Ellen was perfect.
Those trekking poles in their packs came and went, but never touched earth. Some scenes had them, some didn't. grin
Their packs were always floppy....not sure where those tents were stored. No one else in my crew noticed any of those issues and just laughed. I'll probably read the book again after my wife finishes it. I'd say go see it!

My wife and I saw this movie on Friday and thought it was a wonderfully funny movie. Much of the dialogue on the trial sounded very much like those of the "old people" I hike with.

Also the place where they ready to quit until the Smokies opened up in front of them is exactly why we hike.

The language could have been cleaner but that is unfortunately the way people talk these days.
