I've always wanted to explore a swamp. The closest I've ever been was driving through (over) the Honey Island swamp in Louisiana. Thinking about heading down to south GA in the fall and doing a weekend canoe or kayak trip in the Okefenokee swamp. I have some experience with kayaks and canoes, but only day trips on rivers, no overnights.

While certainly no expert, I've been paddling in the Okefenokee NWR almost every year for almost 20 years. Our college outdoor program makes it down there from NYS for part of our spring break adventure. The trails are fairly well marked and, in spite of the fires in recent years, the overall refuge is beautiful. I've been fortunate enough to have paddled the entire refuge from north to south & east to west. If you want to do day trips you can enter from any one of the 3 public entrances but there is an entry fee. If you want to go on an overnight, and I would really recommend that (there's nothing better than seeing the swamp come alive after the sun goes down) you will need to get a permit from the US Fish & Wildlife office. You can go to your favorite search engine to find the website for the swamp. If you're going to rent a canoe or kayak so you don't have to travel a long distance with one on top of your car I would encourage you to check out the website for "Okefenokee Adventures." This is the business that holds the permit for operating in the swamp. Owned and operated by Chip & Joy Campbell, you won't find a nicer group of people to work with. Their prices are incredibly fair and they are fantastic folks to work with. Tell them Snapper sent you and they'll probably get a chuckle out of that.

That's all for now. Please feel free to contact me directly if there's anything I can do to help ou out.

Until next time...Be well.
