For all you that have the fire....can you watch videos that you made yourself? Something like an mp4 file. Can you store it on the device so you can watch without streaming? My mom got one, and she has no idea. I won't get one unless it can do that.

I can partially answer--it has a video player and you can move files in and out via USB cable or wifi, just like any portable storage gizmo. I don't know what native video player it ships with nor what codecs it can translate. I presume you can download other video players via the App store.

My guess is the answer is yes, but with video there's always the question of what codecs the video camera uses and whether they're readable or can be exported to a portable format, like MP4.

Cheers,

I haven't figured out a way to load a video to the Fire, but you can play YouTube Videos. You have to get a free app.

I think I have exhausted the possibilities already, but I'll toss out my question anyway.

I am interested in an e-ink reader because these have outstanding multi-week battery life. I don't need color capability and will not buy a 'smartphone', but I do read books and if I could view PDF map files and documents that would be good, too. However, I would dearly love some audio support to accompany the e-ink display allowing me to bring music along on the same device. So far I cannot find any e-readers that have this combination. Does it exist?

My e-ink Kindle has a music player for MP3s. I presume the new models have kept this function, but don't know for sure. It has speakers and a headphone jack.

Cheers,

Rick

If you want MP3 support, you have to be careful which Kindle you buy. I'd suggest going to Best Buy and checking them out.

Personally, I won't take my Kindle backpacking. It's too much trouble to keep them safe. If it's only a couple of nights I'd rather bring a book. Better yet, I'd rather bring a journal and write instead of read.

You'll need to find an app to play it, but yes.

Thanks Rick and lori. I am familiar with changing the video files. I have to do that for my son's PSP, and my kids v-tech innotabs. There are many free video converters on the web.
I have a program that takes movie dvds and copies them to MP4 format. Ever since I started doing that, I don't lose as many dvds to kids. DVDs and kids don't mix. Of course, Netflix sure helps keeping kids from destroying DVDs. It is also nice to watch a movie in the car, when wifi is not available, and not have to pop dvds in and out.
