Hey ... has anybody tried this?

http://cgi.ebay.com/?item=120715832668

it's probably 2nds, but its still a good price ... especially with shipping. Anybody seen the quality yet?

I tried asking on another website but no answer yet.

It does look like a decent deal. Calculations are different, with the price of the fabric and the shipping calculated per foot.

That's about 6 bucks per yard.

I'd buy sil seconds from Quest or OWF instead - 1.1 sil, not 1.3 - and save a little money on shipping that way. But I'm not particular on color.

It's $5.10 per yard. Is that more than OWF? How much do they charge?

Also ... 1.1 ounce is the weight of silnylon *before* treatment with silicone. After treatment with silicone, it weighs 1.3 ounces.

That is true of any silnylon which starts out as 1.1 ounces.

Thank you to everybody for your input!

Most places post the weight before treatment. There's no indication that 1.3 is pre/post treatment.

I would order from Quest or OWF because I have done so before and trust their quality. I do not know random ebayers. And seconds from either will run about the same for the material in cost.

I wonder sometimes if the endless sniping and griping about sil misting through has to do with low quality sil. But I haven't had a problem with the stuff I've gotten from OWF.

Hi Lori:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. It's always good to hear a variety of input before making a purchasing decision.

Not to be argumentative ... I just wanted to point out that the listing did say:

"Weight (first things first!): 1.3 oz/square yard, including the silicone treatment."

So ... I think we can be sure it's 1.1 ounce (30D) silnylon.

At that price with low shipping costs ... I think I'm going to go ahead and get some. I'll buy some for my tarp, then post here with the results.

Again ... I really want to emphasize that I'm very appreciative of people sharing their thoughts on this and any other subject. It's good to have a thoughtful discussion of the pros and cons of any purchasing decision.

Best of luck to all with your projects!

Ok ... I sent a question to the seller, and here is more info:

It is 30D ripstop nylon, 1.1 ounces before coating, 1.3 ounces after silicone treatment.

He has tested it for waterproofness, and said it is very good. He draped the fabric over the opening of a bucket to make a bowl. Then filled the fabric with water, then rubbed it hard and let it sit for a day ... then rubbed it more and sit more. Then took the fabric off and it was completely dry on the inside of the bucket and the bottom of the fabric.

So ... It sounds good. I went ahead and ordered 10 feet to test it out, and I'll share my personal impressions when it arrives.

That color matches the stuff I got at Walmart for $1.50 a yard.

Good luck with the purchase and tell us how it performs when you make your tent. smile
