Also shows that avalanche conditions, with several feet of wet new snow dumped on top of old consolidated crust, are rather dicey out here in the NW! It may be spring per the calendar, but not yet in the mountains!
The main avalanche chute on Granite Mountain should never be crossed in snow, certainly not on a day with considerable avalanche danger as there was yesterday. The regular route to the summit of Granite Mountain crosses right through that chute.

Great it came out OK in the end, but really a middlin' performance by SAR. Didn't know where to look until someone had the brilliant idea of actually listening to 911 ?!?!?!
Quote:
The successful rescue felt very much in doubt when searchers assembled at the Granite Mountain Trailhead late Saturday afternoon, said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Graham Johnson.
Initially, King County sheriff's deputies only knew the location of the cell tower that picked up the trapped hiker's call. They couldn't reach him on the phone again, so they had to guess as they planned their search.
Later, when investigators reviewed the recording, they learned he had been precise in his description of where he was, saying the avalanche had thrown him into the treeline, 100 feet off the Granite Mountain Trail.

Sounds like the dispatchers didn't relay the info they had to SAR/deputies. This is not unusual as the people that dispatch out the units that I work with often leave out very relevant information. I usually go back on more important calls and look up the call and find out some pretty important details that they often do not tell us. Most likely a training issue.
