That was nice of Sam’s club. They sent me a letter letting me know that I bought Zone bars and that it might have tainted peanut butter in it--- and to bring it in for a refund.

I love these bars as I use them for backpacking and car snacks. Luckily I haven’t opened the bulk package yet. I bought them in early Dec 08.

Now I wonder when a good batch is coming out…

I'd take a copy of the recall list with you when shopping. I spotted some peanut-something Clif bars (part of the recall) at a local supermarket yesterday. Caveat emptor!

After some of the most recent news articles about this peanut processor and their frequent violations, I wonder that anyone would buy their stuff. In the meantime, try making your own peanut butter cookies or energy bars out of real (preferably non-hydrogenated) peanut butter. They'll taste a lot better!

"I bought Zone bars and that it might have tainted peanut butter in it"

Geez, finally an explanation for those posts of yours over on the off-topic forum, global warming to be exact. You are just "zoned out" on tainted peanut butter from those recalled energy bars. wink

Oregon Mouse: I will heed your advice. A few days ago I bought a jar of organic, (& non-hydrogenated) natural peanut butter and back home did a taste test of it and a jar of big-grocery-store-brand peanut butter in the fridge . My 'baser instincts' preferred the latter, the cheaper one. But then I got to looking at the ingredients, and saw that my "baser instincts" were being lured by what was in the cheap brand. Right after peanuts was CORN SYRUP followed closely by SUGAR and a total of 13 additional ingredients that were NOT peanuts. The organic peanut butter was just peanuts and a little salt.

With no ingredients like magnesium oxide, copper sulfate, ferric phosphate and ALL THAT SUGAR, no wonder the organic "just-peanuts" peanut butter came in second in my base taste test. And to think that all that crap is in there so that it's sweet and we consumers won't have to (god forbid) stir it. (And why the cheaper, store-brand stuff with all those additives is suffering from, as Woody Allen might put it, "peanuts envy.")

When my contest was finished, I grabbed the taste-test winner and promptly threw it in the wastebasket (aka doing the right thing.)

Oh totally! Organic natural style PB will never win the taste test - the sugar is what lures folks in...peanuts are not sweet by any means.

The cool thing is after awhile you get used to it though - and the commercial stuff starts tasting waaaayyyy too sweet.

I grew up eating Adam's....always chunky, always the stir kind. I hated it grin My attitude was "When I am an adult I am eating Jiffy!" Same with cold cereal.

Took only a couple years to see the junk wasn't better....lol!

This is off topic from peanut butter recall, but it does relate to more basic tastes. When I was a kid, my mom fed us all cracked-wheat cereal. For those who don't know about it, it is wheat that is just cracked open (as opposed to ground into flower) and cooked like oatmeal. My mom would crack it fresh in the wheat grinder on super coarse. I absolutely hated the stuff. At first, I could put brown sugar on it, but then my dad said it was too expensive. He did allow us to put as much honey as we wanted though (we had a few hives and lots of extra honey). I always wanted to eat cold cereal like all my friends. Now, I love cracked wheat cereal and hate cold cereal. I especially love the "wheat" taste. Some goes for bread. I consider cheap store bread as "Not Fit for Human Consumption". I also noticed that I can't eat fast food (unless it is a salad). I think it is the grease. It makes me sick to my stomach afterward. I think this has to do with my childhood as well, we practically NEVER ate out, maybe 2-3 times a year.

On a side note, I bought some store brand guacamole dip. My wife was eating it and said that it didn't taste much like avocados. We looked on the package "less than 3% avocados". We are going back to homemade guacamole with real avocados.
