I would like to use a small amount of fabric paint on Mammut Champ Pants. They are made of 'Schoeller Dryskin Extreme' fabric. My question...is there a 'fabric paint' that will not destroy the fabrics function in the areas that it is applied to.

Any paint you apply to the fabric is going to plug up the breathability. If it's a small area that won't be much of a problem, if it's i large area it might be. The coating on the fabric may keep most paints, or anything else for that matter, from sticking. Also since it's a stretchy fabric paint will crack. A dye might be a better choice. Ddharma Trading Company is a place to look. If you call the manufacturer you may be able to get some advice or at least a swatch of goods to run some tests on

I second Dharma Trading as THE best source.

They do make paint for lycra/stretch fabrics that won't crack. Dyeing soft shell - well that ain't gonna work.

Why am I envisioning sparkly swirls of glitter paint on your soft shell?

OK Penny....what would you recommend...Jacguard Textile, Setacolor, Lumiere & Neopaque or Jones Tones? These seemed to fit the bill the best for this fabric.

It's been a really long time since I looked into this stuff. IIRC, the lumiere or the neopaque are good for surface treatments on synthetics. I was silk screening and stamping, not painting. When in doubt, ask Dharma.

Penny, Eric....thanks for the imput. I didn't forget you, I have just been gone for awhile 'drowning worms' with grandkids.

Here was the reply from Dharma:

"I did a search online and it seems these are mountain climbing or extreme weather gear. Unfortunately our paints are all meant for 100% natural fiber, which these don't seem to be. Also any weather proofing/waterproofing would inhibit the paint from adhering at all I'm afraid. Even if by some chance you could get the paints to stick, they will stiffen the fabric, and we couldn't say how it might effect the surface treatment of the fabric. Even dyes won't work as they are intended for 100% natural porous fibers as well. Sorry we couldn't offer any help, but we wanted to be honest."
