Hi
I took a buddy and we 4wd into Irish Lake in the cascades 48 miles SW of Bend, Or. The last 4 miles take 45 minutes... and its a high usage road... We central Orygunners likes to 4wd doncha see...

Anyway here is a photo of buddies gear for an over nighter. We took two trips to the island to get our stuff there and a load of firewood. I wish I had a photo of my canoe loaded above the gun'ls bow to stern with fire wood. OK there WAS a spot for me to sit, but I had to push off and then crawl over the fire wood to the stern. good balance - poor planning

It did finally get down to 40 maybe. We were camped at 5385 feet at 43-48.28N, 121-57-38.79. I have inserted photos of this lake and island elsewhere.

I had my old Sierra Designs single walled Flash MAgic - after the flashlight design. I had some condensation inside, but then I carry a small towel for that reason.

I guess I had too warm of sleeping bag and I think I'd rather be cold than hot, so I mostly just slept on my Down Airmattress with my fleece jacket over me and my legs under the down bag as a quilt.

Hope with that much gear and firewood with a canoe to carry it you had a gourmet dinner with wine, and a monsterous fire to enjoy - So was this an episode of Dull Knife Kitchen stadium in the backcountry?

I did not take a knike, only a ti fork and spoon. And I had no need for a knife. We did take an old heavy aluminum skillet to cook in, but since my buddy forgot the tortillas we toasted a loaf of french bread on a stick and ate chicken for dinner. I like to howl at night when camping I wish I could play back recorded animal calls at volume.
This morning I wished I was alone and had another day or two. Its a portage to the upper lake and I haven't canoed there yet. I sort of like the peacefullness of solo canoeing. Maybe I will go back back alone for a few days.

I went kayak camping last week in North Cascades NP with my brother, sister and brother-in-law. That's my yellow kayak in the center of the picture.
The weather was super, we had our boat-in campsite all to ourselves and we had a great time. Sigh! My husband and I will be heading to Arizona next week. I'll be taking my 'yak, though...there are some good lakes, reservoirs and the Colorado River in the Yuma area, so all is not lost. Plan to do some hiking, too.

yer not moving to Arizona are you? You better be careful coming from Washington, you might warp when you dry out. Have a great time, arizona is great rock collecting country, just look down.

Nope--just winter migration. Husband doesn't like cold and snow. We went to Yuma for eight winters in a row--I worked as a home health RN while there--so we know what it's like: Dry, dusty, windy....but plenty of sunshine. Spent the last three winters here at home. Husband says, 'That's enough!' He's not well, so I want him to at least be happy.

MT...

My son's dad grew up in Yuma, and his family is still there, though they now migrate north to Prescott in the summer time. I've only been there in winter... the camper cities are amazing!

I'm sorry to hear hubby is not well... hope he feels better in the dry heat.

Thanks, MS...I fear it's going to be a trying winter at best but your good wishes will help.

When we pack that much, we use an inflatable to tow behind our canoe.
Works great.

Indyr

I threatened to put my buddy in a raft when he nearly sank us. On the trip back he sat on the bottom of the boat - much better. Like having a lead keel. on the way over he sat in the seat - it was more like a load of cannons on deck.

When I was kid and prospecting in the Yukon Territory we floated the forty mile river in a rowboat with our mining gear tied to innertubes and tiedtogether and tied to the boat. It happens that it was midnight that we floated into a short series of riffles when Larry yells ,"jump overboard boy! You need to be a sea anchor to keep the gear going straight so we don't lose it." So I actually jumpedover the stern in waders and was dragged through whitewater behindthe boat! it got worse...

Ya know, I think I want a book format recollection of Jim's Canoe escapades when he was young and dumb - Something tells me it would read at least as well as any Pat McManus book I have on
my shelf

Bigfoot
I don't call you names
Some peoples "dumb" is someone elses passion. You probably think solo climbing and alpine mountaineering are dumb too, as well as white water kayaking, mountain biking on mountain sides, rock skiing, and BASE jumping, and from some perspectives they are, but this an adventure related forum and the degree of danger and skill of different members ranges from beginner to Very advanced, Is adanced dumb? If you surive - did you "win"?
Jim YMMV

I second this Jim, let Kevonnia write it he's got too much time on his hands now that he's retyred and all

I'm advanced stupis Jim, got the Lyme to prove it And all I was doing was practice camping in my sideyard took me 35years to get Lyme but it's so bad I would'nt wish it on any other multi use trail users

I have located the "millennium" edition of my book, but the electronic copy of the first to editions is missing. I will write some harrowing escapades however in the near future. I'm thinking maybe a survivor stud canoe flik.
