Any Luck Carrying Whiskey in a Nalgene

I'm wanting to carry a nice single malt to sip on after dinner. Is a Nalgene suitable for this, without altering the taste? If not, what works best?

Not sure if the life-threatening effects of the Bisphenol-A in the old Nalgene bottles are mitigated by using single-malt Scotch (such as a Macallan) verses a blend (like a Chivas Regal.) Even if either kills you, you'll die happy. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

It's funny you mention Macallan. I guess it's a risk I'll have to take in my BPA free Everyday widemouth.

I've used one of those Nalgene flasks without noticing any alteration in taste. You can leave the bluish bottom stiffener "cup" thingie at home. http://www.rei.com/product/736855

I've had good success carrying the bar in PET bottles--recycled common drinking water bottles--there doesn't seem to be any taste transfer. Just check to find whether you have a leaker before packing it away. I've drenched my pack contents with (a very nice) grenache-shiraz <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

Much cheaper than Nalgene.

If I thought there was a reasonable way to carry some vino into GC in August, I would be all over it.

I have only had the 25YO Macallan but have had the 18YO on many occasions. IMO buy 3 18's and keep the change.

I use a 1 pint Platypus for exactly that. Works perfectly and imparts no taste.
Can't say about Nalgene....I don't own any.

Nalgene is very heavy, use a regular water bottle (PET). Mine held up to 151 Bicardi for 7 days without a problem. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

This is what I do as well... Had one bottle on the PCT last me for over a month. Only reason I tossed it was that I happened to buy a new bottle of water in town, and I figured I'd just use the new one instead of the old one.

Here's my hot weather strategy: repackage the wine and evacuate every bit of air when closing. Stow it inside a ziplock inside some clothing next to my water bladder, which is filled 3/4 with ice. Then, plan on drinking it on night 1 (which makes you VERY popular if hiking with partners). I often include some sort of meat dish on night 1, packing it frozen next to the wine.

The spirits support nights 2 through...however long you can string it out.

I knew I could count on the resourcefullness of you guys for some jam-up ideas. I am headed out tomorrow. This trip may not qualify as "roughing it" but it has inspired me, both for the Grand Canyon and for future backpacking trips.

Another vote for the Platypus pint bottle. Less taste imparted by it than by a Nalgene (I've used it for wine and bourbon - both fared well).

I've done the ice thing on night one but I drink whiskey. The luxury of a few ice cubes and something cold to chase it starts a trip out the right way. I use a plastic flask or buy the pint bottles of plastic and reuse them. You have to pack them out anyway. Plus, they are flat and pack easily. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

My regular backpacking booze is MacCallan Cask strength (weight efficient you know, I water it more) in a 125 ml nalgene. sometimes two of them. Doesn't seem to alter the taste at all.

I know this sounds silly but I put my wine and other libations in a small baby bottle. It is light, holds any liquid, and fits nicely in my pack. I found one that you can close without needing the nipple. No taste is imparted from the bottle. If it's good enough for baby, it's good enough for mama! The new bottles are now BPA-free.

There are those items for which weight is not a factor.

Canadian Mist already comes in a 200ml flat plastic botttle: just dump it out and put some good dark rum in, sometimes it goes good with lemonaide mix.

In Polish, Vodka is "wodka" which means "little water". Or, another way to say it, is that it is the diminutive form of water "woda".

If you are bringing in the Mac get a flask. I realize the entire concept here is "light weight" - but you are already breaking the rules by bringing a no value add item to begin with. Might as well go all out.

At the very least go buy a pint of Jack, Drink it, wash the bottle in the dish washer and fill with the good stuff.

Oh, man, heaven! We hiked, motored all over western Ireland. Stayed in B&B's and a great hotel in Kilarney. Hike'd/fly fished in the big national park there. I'm a musician and play Celtic pub sessions here and always wanted to do it there...and got several chances. The place is vastly different than England, however, with the Euro and the gigantic growth going on, old Ireland is going away fast. Visit soon if you have a hankerin' too. I'd like to go back and do a long hike of some of the trail systems there. We hit the high points, but didn't camp. The Dingle and Kerry regions mostly. The little towns are space perfectly for overnight stays at very reasonable B&B's....but Ireland under the stars would be a whole different take.


Whisky in nalgene...a 1 pt. Platypus bag makes the perfect flask and imparts no bad taste at all.

I didn't read all of the posts here but the plastic pint bottle that different sprits come in make great for carring your favorite plus they can be used to carry stove fuel. Just make sure to mark em.
