Is there a way to train for big hike in short mile - 04/27/08 05:52 AM

I been training pretty regular for my big hike and slowly getting there. But now the kids want to hike with me and we usually do 2-3 miles roads or 1-2 miles trail/bushing. we really enjoy hiking together and the time spend together. But, I really can't get my hiking speed and distance w the kids. Does anybody have any ideas of how I still can achieve my training in the short distances and short time? My kids are both 7-9 years old and pretty active. I really can't leave them home while I train and they really enjoy being able to be with their Dad and they actually seem to talk more with me on the hikes then at home being distracted with the t.v/xbox.Thanks Ron

Doesn't really matter. You've got your priorities straight. If you have your kids talking to you, then you're golden.

Only other option is to do something after they are in bed or early in the morning -- depending on whether you are a night owl or early bird.

Er...take them on longer hikes! At their age they can easily do 10 miles! It does take time to work up to it.

But..honestly? Don't worry so much about training. Half of hiking hard miles is upstairs anyways If you can hike miles already, then just getting out for jaunts is all that matters. Training is way overrated IMO.

Carry a BIG HEAVY pack. Or, you can carry your kids on your back. I agree with Sarbar, just go on longer hikes and don't worry about it.

I did it this weekend. While my wife hiked straight I had a 1/2 loaded pack on and cruised everywhere picking up cans and garbage. Figured she put in 4 miles and I put in 7. Ended up with a full pqck and a orange road side garbage bag full.

“Or, you can carry your kids on your back. ”

I’ve done this. They like helping daddy work out. Plus when they know they’re going to a park and back they are more willing. I also practiced carrying them on the front so I could also carry my pack. Once I was out backpacking with my kids and this technique came in handy when my little girl injured her self in the mountains of UT

Like sarbar pointed out, they should be able to go 10 miles. I have to have motivators for my youngest daughter as a reward like:
Smores
Fishing
Frisbie
Camp fire that she starts
