Has anyone ever used the GEOS SAR service? - 08/06/18 10:17 AM

My solo hike to Alaska is coming up in less than 3 weeks. I was in my Garmin inReach account and noticed a service offered by GEOS as a Search and Rescue benfit for $18.00yr. It basically is a $100k insurance policy for rescue situations.

Curious is if anyone has first hand experience with this benefit?

Find out if it's needed. Many states won't charge for rescue; I have no idea if Alaska is one of those. Do note that if there may be helicopter charges ($$$$) even if no other charges. It really depends on the state, and whether the helicopter is private or DOD/National Guard (the latter chalk it up to practice time)! Some health insurances (mine is one) will pay if it's a helicopter ambulance, but not otherwise.

I do recommend donating to the local volunteer rescue organization wherever you go. These folk risk life and limb and spend long hours getting us out of trouble!

On the other hand, $18 is really cheap! Find out how much it actually covers!
