What songs remind you of the Road? - 01/31/09 01:10 AM

You know, the far-off-stare inducing kind? Here's a few of my favorites:
- Long as I can see the light (CCR)
- Ol 55 (The Eagles)
- Ramble On (Led Zeppelin)
- Mike Oldfield
- Adrift and at peace (Nine Inch Nails)

The song that's always playin' in my mind when I'm getting weary on a hike or a run or just need a lift is "Gettin' By" by Jerry Jeff Walker. Here's the lyrics:

Gettin' By

OK buckaroos, Scamp Walker time again
I'm trying to slide one by you once more
Don't matter how you do it
Just do it like you know it
I've been down that road once or twice before

Chorus:
Just gettin' by oh gettin' by's my stock in trade
Living it day to day
Pickin' up the pieces wherever they fall
Just letting it roll, letting the high times carry the low
I'm just living my life easy come, easy go

Last week I was thinking, it's record time again
And I could see Mike making those faces
Ah Mike, don't you worry, something's bound to come out
Besides, I've been down this road once or twice before

Chorus

Income tax is overdue, I think she is too
Been busted and I'll probably get busted some more
But I'll catch it all later, can't let em stop me now
I've been down this road once or twice before.

I got to hear him sing this song at a little dive in Austin while I was a freshman at UT. Maybe 30 people there, including Darryl Royal, the championship football coach, at the bar (in February) in a straw cowboy hat and white tennis shoes. At least I think Jerry Jeff sang it -- he (honestly!) passed out mid-song falling back off his barstool, set over.

JJW. Good stuff. The Armadillo, Austex Lounge, Soap Creek Saloon, Antone's.

Were you fortunate enough to see SRV at Steamboat on 6th St?

Kevon, when were you at UT?? I was probably in that bar...."Jer Jeff" made a habit of partying a little hearty. Last saw him at Bass Hall in Ft. Worth where he played so long he outlasted the audience. Ever make it to AWH? "Gettin' By", "London Homesick Blues", and "Redneck Mother" are etched into my brain. Still play those for folks on my guitar.
Willie's "On the Road Again", "Lefty and Pancho", Nanci Griffith's "Great Divide", and Steve Fromholz's "Texas Trilogy"....the heyday of Austin music! All great road music.

Re: What songs remind you of the Road? - 01/31/09 11:20 AM

Paul & Scottyb, we got a common love here. I was at UT '74-'78 (and UH, TT and SMU, too! -- shoulda wrote a guidebook.) Yeah, spent many a night at Armadillo World HQ. You named some great ones, esp. "Texas Trilogy." Was Lefty Frizell the guitar player missing the fingers? What was the name of that great music store near The Drag and that flea market? Trying to remember it for years, but with diminished brain cells from AWH and that place out on Bee Caves road, can't. Scottyb: Was that the Soap Creek Saloon on Bee Caves? Remember the ruts in the dirt road to that place?

(BTW, Paul, how'd you make it thru your ice storm?)

That was it, one of it's locations. It moved several times after that. Remember, they filmed some shots of that movie there, with Peter Fonda, "Outlaw Blues".

To answer my own question, I figured & found out it was Billy Joe Shaver that was short on the digits but not the talent.

Excellent tunes, I'll have to find some of those. Jackson Browne is probably my favorite of all for the road.

NIN album, And All that Could Have Been - Still, is a whole CD of songs like 'A Warm Place'. And he has four albums of instrumentals, 'Ghosts I-IV'.

Re: What songs remind you of the Road? - 02/01/09 01:20 PM

Oh, Dryer, you're now my favorite! wink So few people have ever heard of Nanci Griffith. She is one of my all time favorites, and I used sing Great Divide as well as many of her other songs with a group that played for mostly cops.

Oh, and I'll add to the list just about anything by Kate Wolf.

"I used to sing Great Divide"

Is this it?

Yup, Nanci is in Ireland touring. The band I'm in now covers Great divide. www.5secondrule.com
She's got a perfect Texas voice.

That's it! My band does a three part harmony with that tune.

Kevon, we were in Austin at the same time. Just came back from camping with another guy who was there then too.

Paul:

Great website for the band. I'll keep an eye on the site and next time I'm in the D will try to get by and see you all, as long as the place serves Guinness. I love traditional Irish music. Was in Ireland in November and heard lots, including at Matt Malloy's in Westport, the place owned by one of the Chieftains.

Great music you're making. Everyone should check it out.

Re: What songs remind you of the Road? - 02/02/09 01:40 PM

Thanks! We're just starting to get booked in the pubs..we're not taking just anything that comes along. Been playing other venues not on the schedule. Did you read the musician page? We run three 45min. sets of "road music" a night... grin
Guiness is required in the contract. smirk

I was in Ireland in May. Wow. Just "Wow". Awesome place.

There is a pub music session in Arlington every Tuesday night and Dallas on Saturdays/Sundays. Next time you are in town, let me know and I'll tell you where we'll be.

Re: What songs remind you of the Road? - 02/02/09 05:56 PM

There has been so many! When I hear a song, I can recall when, where and what I was doing at the time. Although I have many fav's, I don't listen to much in the woods. I'm inspired to write my own stuff in solitude. I pen the lyrical idea and when I get back I take it to my bud's studio to finish. Then I create my own memories.

You can go here-- http://eyereckon.com/Calculated%20X/Calculated%20X/
and check out sample bits of stuff I did in the 80's
I wrote tracks 2,5,8,11,12,13,15. Track 15 is something I penned a few years ago and is a remix. This is a compilation CD with some old live stuff someone recorded with a protable, battery operated cassete POS.
My newer stuff is not protected at the moment but is influenced by getting out of the city and into the woods. A title I'm currently working on is "No sign of life" That meaning the city..

"The Idiot Kings" by Soulcoughing is great too.
"No Quarter" - Tool. I actually like this better then the original.
"No Woman No Cry" - Bob Marley 'Good friends we've had, or good friends we've lost, along the way' Gets me every time.
"Face of Appalachia" - John Sebastian. Formerly of the Lovin Spoonful, great song about the AT.

There's a wonderful album that is by far my favorite to play when on a road trip. It's by a band called Turin Brakes, the album is called "the Optimist Lp". There's even a song titled "The Road" which is one of my favorites off the album. An amazing album that is highly underrated and overlooked by many.

Here's their myspace page:

Oh no, the video in the link is no longer available! Sorry, I was away in Sydney for the week and didn't get to it sooner. I realized, though, that the song I'm referring to is "Across the Great Divide."

"I've been walkin' in my sleep
Countin' troubles 'stead of countin' sheep
Where the years went I can't say
I just turned around and they've gone away . . ."
