Poor Bear...

Actually I feel for him because that could happen to anyone. We only like to kick him when he's down because the show is itself so assinine.. I would hope (ok, maybe i've got my rose colored glasses on) that he's not actually that much of a doofus when out on his own. (hey, it *could* be like that...)

I don't know anything about this chap or the shows he is involved with as I seldom watch TV due to it's soporific effect on me.

The guy in AK, who was killed with his lady, was Timothy Treadwell; he was a former California hippy drug user and NOT any type of a ...bear expert... That utter imbecile got himself and his woman killed AND also the bear concerned and this was due to his gigantic ego and total ignorance of bear behaviour....I feel sorry for the bear.

ANYONE can get hurt or lost or attacked in the wilderness, no matter how experienced you may be and this is a good thing to remember as it hopefully makes us cautious and careful in our explorations and thus safer.

I'd have been more worried if it was the Survivor Man who got injured; he goes alone, while Bear has a camera crew.

I'm a Survivorman fan also. Unexpected things can happen at almost anytime.

Bah, Survivorman drives me nuts. Yes, he's a bit more realistic in how he goes about the whole process, but he complains far too much for my liking and tends to merely wait it all out. Sometimes he "survives" only because time ran out and they had to come get him and I spent the whole time watching him moan and groan. And he isn't entirely genuine himself. I mean, on more than one occassion I've seen him "discover" a single frito in his pocket.

As for ol' Mr. Grylls, well, I'm surprised it took him this long to get hurt. But I'm not quite so harsh on him for the simple fact they always tell you at the beginning of the show that they put certain things in front of him just so he can do it and show you what's what, if for some reason you happen to come into the situation.

And if anyone is really expecting to learn how to survive off of any television show, especially those two, well, ignorance is bliss, lol.

I wouldn't be so quick to beat up Survivorman. While I agree with your general assessment of Television (kill your television!) Les Stroud's show has at least been *relatively* honest - I agree with you that he really does just tend to "wait it out" - starving himself for a week. But heck, in the "scenarios" he talks about, you're waiting to be rescued. realisticly, that's what you're gonna do - short of gathering
some wild edibles and perhaps setting some snares - which he ususally attempts with varying (usually lousy) degrees of success. You ask me that lousy degree of success is *exactly* what should be shown to people so they don't get Alexander Stupidtrap ideas.

I'll give him credit for managing to show himself

- messing up looking for wild edibles, and puking his guts out.
- lighting his shelter on fire because he put the fire too close
- slicing his hand open doing something dumb with his knife

etc, etc.

At least in my opnion he shows a more realistic view of things by "enduring" - than Bear Grylls and his steak in a badger skin and extra in a Grizzly Bear suit.. If you ask me, Les Stroud is far less Dangerous to have on TV than Grylls (in that he tells people to do a lot less stupid dangerous crap!) (he still does stupid stunts - like fire pistons and polishing coke cans, etc. etc.. Just less stupid ones)

You wanna see where he doesn't just "endure" - go find a
copy of Snowshoes and Solitude from the CBC - that was a better show (also amusing to watch them screw up, but then
they stayed out for a year)

Trust me I have seen full grown grizzly bears and full grown Kodiak bears in Alaska and there won't be much help with either of those with nothing but a camera crew. They wouldn't stand a chance unless they were armed. Hell a grizzly would eat him alive while the camera crew watched. The bear doesn't care about spectator's. He is just doing what he does best.....SURVIVING...sabre11004...

Re: What Happens When a Bear Gets Hurt? - 01/17/09 08:45 PM

The Survivorman and Bear are two different types of individuals. The survivorman is an outdoors man and has been for over twenty years. He teaches survivor classes in a number of different categories and I think that if I was stranded he might be a great guy to have for company....Where Bear is concerned, he was an ex-marine in Britain and was also special forces in the same marine corp. So in my way of thinking their survivor techniques are just different as far as the way they go about what they do and how they do it. Truth be known the Survivorman is a more "get by the best way that you can" kinda guy and Bear is a much more disciplined guy..

Of the two I'd much rather be stranded with Les Stroud(Survivorman). Les showed the real deal on his programs. His complaints were real also, yet he persevered. A "regular guy" could survive in the bush using the knowledge Les shared.

As for Man vs Nature, I knew the first time I saw Bear jump into a far north river he was goony. (You could just make out the PFD he was secretly wearing under his jacket).

His penchant for taking on hairbrained stunts for the sake of sensationalism would get most people hurt, or killed.

No, I'd much rather be stranded with Bear Grylls because I could actually survive a lot longer. I'd feel less guilt when I had to eat him wink wink wink wink wink

Don't forget Bear comes complete with camera crew. You'd be able to go months off of that I'm sure.

Survivorman appeals to adults - people with common sense and a little bit of outdoor experience. Man vs Wild appeals to kids - the video game crowd.

Les worked hard at making Survivorman realistic. Bear Gylis worked at making Man vs Wild entertaining.

Economically, entertaining probably pays better than realistic.
