there STILL no snow - 02/06/10 12:52 PM

I moved to the Cascades of Oregon to ski and winter camp and we still don't have any snow below about 6,000'. I'm gonna have to drive to Bend and up to Mt Bachelor to go cross country skiing. I wonder if you guys in DC have skis?

That's crazy, no snow in Oregon. Have you looked outside to see if you're really in the mountains? I'm in Indiana, south part, we've had only an inch or two on the ground but it's been there for most of the past month, melts off for a day or two and then snows again. Too bumpy for skiing, you'd just wreck your skis if you tried. The weather people are going crazy, predicting a snowfall of an inch or two and calling it a Winter Storm. This latest one got publicized here like the end of the world and we have two inches on the ground. Another round of it coming through tonight, again the end of the world storm that would have been pretty normal before all the weather had to be exciting.

I was reading the other day that people are taking up snowshoeing because of the poor economy, can't afford to go skiing. I think that must have been written by somebody who never put on a pair of snowshoes. I don't know of anything fun about it.

When I lived in the Ozarks there was one guy who owned cross country skis and he was always on the news in Springfield when it snowed deep enough for him to use them. Unless it's a constant environment people don't buy the gear, I suppose. You'd think that in Washington D.C. there'd be enough moneyed people to have the gear and use it.

Jimmy
The weather report here will be for snow every day for the next week, and one day we'll get half an inch and it'll melt off. There's snow up high on the Cascades, but not down in town unless you go to a parking lot and jump on whats left of a pile from shoveling. I agree with you about snow shoeing though - I think its about three times more work than skiing.

We're actually having a typical El Nino winter around here. It seems really weird after two years in a row of unusually high snow levels!

El Nino has affected us, too, here in south central New Mexico. 153 inches of snow to date on the local 12K mountain and 60 inches on the ground midway up the ski runs. I'm getting a lot of great snowshoeing in this year. Pika, keep sending your SoAz storms our way!

Sure beats a 12 hour drive to see ANY snow! You are describing Texas weather! ( 27 deg here now, but clear skies)

Typical winter here in Milwaukee , WI. We should have 14 more inches on top of the four already on the ground.

The 12th - 15th I'll be hiking through the South kettle Moraine state forest. The snow should make it fun.

Here is a link to a simple map of the forest. Forest map

I'll be going north to south on the ice age trail.

Hey grit, Yeah the Ruidoso and Cloudcroft area is having a great snow season, especially compared to the past two years. I really don't have a bag warm enough to hit the mountains in the winter but its going to be great with all the streams running come spring. Im really looking forward to it.

Jim, sounds like you are getting the same as we are here in the middle of the Rockies. Not much snow. I need snow this weekend.
