Late March earlly April trip - 12/26/11 05:19 PM

Son and I are planning a late March earlly April Backpacking trip again. Been to smokies but dont want to shelter camp. We would rather Hang the hammocks. I am considering Garden of the Gods In Shawnee Nat. Forest. If anyone has other midwest sugestions for that time of year, please let me know? I am also considering AT. in regions outside the Smokies? Any other sugestions or insite would be appreciated? Thanks Kent

The Grayson Highlands, near Damascus, VA, is a good spot on the AT. Also near the Smokies, just north, are Big South Fork NRRA and Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. The Red River Gorge, southeast of Lexington, KY, is an interesting geological area: lots of natural archs.

Arkansas is usually nice that time of year. I've been to the Buffalo River, Boston Mountains (Ozark Highlands Trail) and the Ouachitas in late March and had great weather for all.

We just got back from Big South Fork and may be going there again in late March, so I second that as another suggestion.
