Quick, need help with easy Mashed Potato Recipes - 05/14/08 11:49 AM

[color:"blue"]I'm leaving before dawn on this Saturday (5/17) for three months of hiking and have finally decided to use only mashed potatoes as the base of all my dinners.

What can I put in them other than butter buds, bacon bits, parsley, mayonnaise (packet) and powdered cheese made into sauce?

I'm using an ION alcohol stove to heat water and will measure out my ingredients into my Titi Snowpeak 700cc cup.

THANK YOU, Coosa
(I will have access to a computer on May 20 to check on answers and then I'm off line for three months).[/color]

You can add nearly anything to them. Heck I added salad dressing to them yesterday. You can add gravy mixes, diced up cheese, dried veggies - whatever you like.

But 3 months of just taters? Yikes. No thanks!

LOL, not exactly three months worth. I'll have about three weeks or two and a half of mashed potatoes and . . . Then the person I'm hiking with for 145 miles will be fixing the meal for all of us. Then for three weeks I'll be hiking into nearby Trail Towns every two or three days to stock up on whatever I want.

Eight or nine weeks on the Appalachian Trail.

Love being retired.

I'd suggest .. garlic granules, dehydrated diced onions, and lots of Parmesan cheese. and any kind of veggies you can get your hands on, freeze dried peas always seem to go good with taters.

darn near anything.. except bugs !!

Small packets of meat (tuna, shrimp, salmon, clams, chicken breast) are really good.

So's anything smoked.

I found individual packets of Idahoan brand mashed potatoes recently in a great size (4 oz mix, 2 cups of mashed potatoes when done). Several flavors - really good. I add in a bit of butter or olive oil, and usually the meat or other veggies as fillers.

you can add dried hamburger or beef jerky along with veggies and gravy. Good tasting glop!

Instant black bean soup mixes are nice, and any kind of gravy or sauce makes them much more palatable. My cold/wet weather lunch staple is mashed spuds and mushroom gravy, it warms you up on the inside. Try to make the gravy separately and pour it on top, it will look and taste more like "real" food than if you just mix up all the powders before rehydrating.

Good idea matt, I like mushroom gravy too. You can put all manner of dried spices and seasonings in to make a 'different tasting' meal every night. Personally I would get bored eating the same thing day after day

The BEST brand of instant mashed potatoes i have EVER eaten are....PARADISE VALLEY! ....'ALL NATURAL CREAMY MASHED POTATOES' All you need to do is add warm water for less than 10 minutes! The Butter and Russet potatoes are in there as is negligible salt. SUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS!

8) 2/3rd cup servings per 6.4ounce package! Comes in boxes of 36 packs too economical!

Precooked dehydrated omlette - the kind you don't have to fry, just add water to.
it works awesome with mashed taters.
