romantic dinners

romantic dinners - 02/19/08 04:54 PM

What do people suggest as a romantic dinner for two while on a favorite hike? I searched through the old posts for a while but didn't find much. I figured if it's just an overnight trip, then weight & bulk won't matter too much. I prefer to cook with a stove, but I'm open to the idea of using a fire.

The hitches: we don't drink, and I happen to be lactose intolerant. That pretty much kills anything Italian.

edit: Cooking with wine is sometimes fun.

Romantic dinners means slowly munching on really great food, many courses - normally chased with wine or whatever.

A cheese dip and pita bread for starters. and some flame seared tiger prawns with some cocktail sauce starts things off.

Then a hot sliced duck breast salad with some vinegret and diced veges. A roast rabbit done to a nice brown on the spit. Or a piece of Elk Steak, or Squab for the fowl eaters...

Top it off with slow roasted bannanas in the skin and split open with honey drizzled on them, OR large sweet strawberries dipped in sugar.

I'm trying to think of some of the things my girlfriend and I cook on our annual gourmet BP.

Re: romantic dinners - 02/19/08 05:35 PM

Depends on the tastes of the folks involved. Also the lenght of time out to the designated spot on the trail where you propose to serve this meal

Now, if you can make it to 'the spot' on the first night, you can pretty much plan the meal with everything fresh you like, fruit and veggies, even meat properly wrapped for the trip temperatures.

Myself i indulge in a bit of bubbly, some quality salmon, fresh veggies/salad, nice crusty bread, and a nice small 'Indian fire' for cooking and relaxing by YMMV

Jim:

Reading that, I thought I was at Captain Jack Aubrey's table aboard the Surprise in a Patrick O'Brian novel. (Someone even did a 'cookbook' of recipes for all those feasts he had aboard in those twenty-something novels.)

I want to hear more particulars about your 'annual gourmet bp' i.e., are you using llamas or sherpas to get the stuff to your campsite? You making an ultralight souffle?

I have yet to understand why drinking=romantic. Oh wait...beer goggles?

Just make something you like that is a bit fancier. Being outside makes it always taste better! And have a great dessert

Kevonia,
The annual gourmet trip is for 2 nights in the Sierras and icludes 2 outrageous dinners and lunches. My friend brings all of the food and I bring all of the gear.

We use both of my huge Kelty packs, the cloud 6500 and the Super Tioga frame pack and we fill each to the top and carry 40 pounds apiece. Two bottles of fine wine packed in and out.

And 2 huge airmattresses for Boating on the lake. The reason for this trip is to just kick back and totally eat, suntan, and hang out for 3 days. We rarely hike over 5 miles, normally 2-3,but one requirement is a private lake.

You mean floating on the lake Jim

Barry, that Super Tioga frame pack of Jim's sounds like it would carry a load of Bibles Maybe PM Jim about the specs on it.

All food tastes better in the outdoors, building up one's appettite in getting to the meal does'nt hurt one bit either

Re: romantic dinners - 02/20/08 11:00 AM

OK, Jim, please notify us all of the date/location of your next gourmet hike in advance. Maybe we can sneak up behind your camp just as dinner is getting ready, make a noise like many angry bears or mountain lions and scare you off...oh, wait, I can't remember whether you're one of the ones who's posted about carrying firearms to protect against critters. Maybe I'll have to think up a better scheme. Ideas, anyone???

Re: romantic dinners - 02/20/08 11:39 AM

Yeah, make camp up wind from Jim's camp, while he's fighting off the bears from your cooking smells, you raid his camp and eat his chow

Only kidding Jim, I'd never invite myself to your little shindig, I'll wait for the invitaion to arrive by mail

Come to think of it, eating well has always been a part of my love of backpacking and camping outdoors. I mean, we are 'working out' constantly so there's no fear of real weight gain out there That's why i don't poobah car camping posts, it lets you REALLY bring your A game to the campfire

Jim,

Now you are just scaring me.

This thread offers a lot of double-entendre opportunities. Where is MNS when we need her?

Re: romantic dinners - 02/20/08 01:08 PM

I say we all find Jim's 'private lake, and hide in the bushes until he's out floating on his 'yacht' then make with the party favors

LOL Food...

I'm working on getting healthy (been sick all month just one thing after the other) and working hard at work. I'll have to revisit this thread when I'm feeling better and see if I can come up with a few good remarks

Yep...a skunk. Ya wouldn't shoot a cute little skunk, would ya Jim? If that doesn't get Jim and crew up and running: Chicken, beef, and fish placed in a plastic bag and left in the hot sun for three days - then run through a blender and liberally dispersed upwind of the camp. I can't imagine anyone having an appetite after smelling that. This is great stuff for getting back at that restaurant who kicked you out because your "been on the trail for a week" odor was "bothering the other customers."

Yeah, just stuff it down in the seat back in the booth before you grab your pack to go Nity. Now where IS that smell coming from that he's gone

Re: romantic dinners - 02/22/08 07:51 PM

nightyowl
Skunks:
I got a couple skunk stories.
We lived in skunk territory [amongst others] and I was wont to toss garbage out the patio door for what ever critter that wandered by. One night I flipped the sliding patio door open and was about to throw a LARGE bone onto the patio when a movement caught my eye and 2 baby skunks not 3 feet outside the door stared at me from my target zone. I froze and slowly closed the door.

So anyway armed with the knowledge from this: one night my wife and I were car camping in a dark camp groud and there was rustling in the bushes. Before throwing a rock I thought it smarter to pull out the Night Vision Gear and sure enough it was a skunk, so we ignored him.

I often hike around camp at night and find a place of concealment and watch for animals. Oh geez - the NVG is 3.5 magnification and sometimes the size and aparent closeness of animals is a bit unnerving. And eyes reflect the irfrared lazer like headlights. The first time I turned towards a crackling sound and stared a deer in the face I thought it was an alien with huge glowing eyes and I screamed like a little girl and scared the poor thing so that it ran off into distant bushes to hide.

Everyone who looks at the sky with NVG says "WOW", and mine amplifies light 35,000 times so it looks like the Pleades everywhre you look.

Anyway as I said - I could be up in the rocks watching in passive or active search mode infrared. You wouldn't see any emissions in passive mode. Stealth would not work and you have to mantain "lazer silence". Assume that I do not monitor radio bands because you could be using an LPI signal. Low Probability Intercept. The bears and the bees will tell me if someones on the mountain.

Re: romantic dinners - 02/25/08 07:04 PM

I'm thinking like prawn k-bobs,and garlic bread rolled up in foil. Both could be frozen before hand, and both would thaw relatively quick.Add maybe a couple artichokes, and a pot to boil them.Don't forget the mayo sauce.
