Packets - o - stuff?

Packets - o - stuff? - 06/17/10 02:49 PM

So, I just got a tip on the QT that I'm getting a dehydrator for father's day! smile

In anticipation, I've been looking over Sarbar's site, trailcooking.com, at some recipes to make. I noticed a lot of times, she's getting packets of peanut butter, olive oil, honey, and so forth. I've never seen these packets in stores. Anyone got any hints as to where I can look? I'm in northeast Ohio if anyone has direct experience with stores in that area.

Thanks!

Thanks folks - I should clarify though: I'd prefer to find a brick and mortar place. If I have to order online, fine, but I prefer brick and mortar locations because then I'm not making delivery trucks bring extra packages just to me and it ensures that I have a place to pick up last minute supplies of things.

You could check restaurant supply places, but they may only sell wholesale.

Sam's and Costco. Also restaurant supply places. We have some good ones near us. Problem is, you won't use 1000 of them. When you drop by fast food places, start collecting a few packets and store them in the frig.

When I've needed these little packets to round out a Scout trip menu, I've often just asked to speak to the manager, and offer to buy what I need. Many times, when they find out I only need a dozen or so, they'll tell me to just take them - then ask how the trip went when I'm back there the next week.

Never hurts to build those relationships.

I have found the same, ask the manager of fast food outlets and they will often give you what you need. I got relish packets for tuna that way. Peanut butter is now being sold in grocery stores in individual serving packets. An alternative is to by small containers from Dicks Sporting Goods, or even those travel kits meant for flyiers to take shampoo and such in thair carry on luggage, then repackage your home quantities in them. Another sourse for lemon juice packets is Cici's Pizza buffets. GFS (?) is a restraunt supplier that has opened retail stores. If you don't know of one try asking restraunts who supplies them. If all else fails minimus sells just about everything in travel sized packs, if they don't have it they will try to find it for you.

Yes-

Costco/Sam's, etc. Also, I've bought packets from restaurants and ordered from the links to the left here at this site. Might have been minimus.

For some items you can make your own packets. Use a household iron to seal washed snack bags. I can get several little pouches from a large potato chip (or whatever) bag.

The moocher's list on where to find packets:
http://www.trailcooking.com/trail-cooking-101/hard-find-food-items

I will say though that Minimus rocks - $20 order gets you FREE shipping and it is fast as well. $20 gets you a lot of packets - and if you think it out.....if you have to drive around or buy 100 of an item in town, well that online order can save money, time and gas smile

When all else fails, I have used a Foodsaver and scissors to cut a bag down to a smaller size - have to have a lot of material around the edges for the sealer to grab - I use them to make small packets of favorite items that can't be found anywhere in tiny portions.
