llamas - 10/31/12 03:02 AM

Rockchucker asked how much water does a llama drink? Just hanging in the pasture on an 85* day they probably drink every second or third day. I think part of that is because the water tank is in one corner of a 30 acre pasture far away from their favorite grass, but llamas are kin to camels (camelids) and they can go longer under stress without water than horses or cows. I don't know about burros. On the same 85* day with 60-75 lbs. of gear and miles of elevation gain they should drink several times a day. They seldom drink as much as they should out of creeks. I don't know why, they are just picky that way. At the end of the day I give them a bucket of water and they each typically drink about 1.5-2 gallons.
