Flyfishing at the beach

I'm planning a trip to Fort walton beach for the 4th and I want to do some surf casting and I'll probably fish of a pier some. Anybody got any tips. The heaviest fly rod I have is a 8.5' 8wt. I've tied several streamers and several things that may work but have never tried to use em. Yet!
