my gear list for edit - 06/21/08 09:11 AM

hey everybody,

i'm going to north manitou island in a few days and it's the first trip i've planned myself (more or less), so I was wondering if anyone could help me out by reviewing my list of materials and seeing if there's anything obviously missing...

backpack with rain cover

2 nalgenes

rain fly

water filter

mess kit

sleeping bag/sleeping pad

tent

stove

cooking utensils

food for as many days plus one extra

first aid

rope to hang packs

bathing clothes/towel

clothes (1 pair zip off pants, 1 long, 1 short sleeve shirt; rain suit; wool sweater

hiking boots/crocs

flashlight

knife

roll of t.p. and "bowel trowel"

stuff bags/garbage bags to organize/carry waste

------
this is just a general list, there are other smaller items i plan to bring but didn't mention here. just wanted to make sure i've got the bigger items...thanks

Yosefi,
This looks like a pretty good basic list. You can look at the non-forum part of this web site and there are some really good list.
Be sure and give us a trip report.

You could compare yours with the gear lists on the home page of this forum (in the left-hand column--there's a 7-day list and a 3-day list). That will give you an idea of whether you've left out something important. I hope you're weighing this stuff! I have everything listed on a spreadsheet, with weights. While this was a big help in getting my pack weight down, its main purpose now is as a checklist which I print out before every trip.

Is the "rainfly" part of your tent or a separate tarp? If it's part of your tent, just include it with the tent. If it's a separate tarp, do you really need it?

Yosefi
Welcome
Generally we like for people to fill in some of their profile if they are gonna ask questions. I had to look up Manitou islad (Lake Michigan). We know nothing about you. Do you live in Wisconsin? ARe you prepared for the weather out there? You didn't list any leg insulation, will it be that warm that you don't need a jacket at night?

This is a very generic list for someone leaving "in a few days". It is very hard to critique, but somehow a list with "mess kit" in it just doesn't sound like you have assembled this stuff yet nor do you have specific plans about what to get. I think you need a lot more help than you think.

It's hard when you're being generic - bathing clothes/towel could weigh 5 lbs or less than 1, depending on what they're made of. Mess kit could be a pot and cup, or a complete kit of nonstick cookware with spatula, BBQ fork, and two burner kerosene stove.

Also hard for those of us unfamiliar with the area - what are the temps where you're going at this time of year? Are you taking enough clothes, or too many?
