camping is kind of like riding motorcycles, nobody wants a slow wobbly noisy wet old motorcycle. Maybe that's all you can afford, but it will never be a good one and you will give up or replace it.

I'm old and I bought all of my gear a long time ago; I have no idea what it costs now, but presumably good gear is not cheap. If you buy good durable pieces that will fit into your future camping gear list, you may be using them for another fifty years.

I was a hippy camper with $50 worth of gear including pack, and I did utterly stupid things and survived, but thinking back on it now, I'm glad that I had the experience, but I was often on the very edge...Jim

The biggest cost to getting started is not getting started. Time is the only currency we can't create more of. It doesn't matter how bobo your gear is; get out there.
